Rescoldos de paz y violencia [Embers of violence and peace]. A trilogy about the Basque Country
Embers of violence and peace is the name given to the trilogy of documentary theater that we have composed about the violence in the Basque Country and its peace process from our company during ten years (2009-2019) It consists of the plays: Proyecto 43-2 (Project 43-2, 2012), La mirada del otro (The other’s gaze, 2015) and Viaje al fin de la noche (Journey to the end of the night, 2017).
This triple program is unique in Spain and portrays, through three very different plays and stagings, the peace process in our country.
This trilogy revolves around the question:
¿ARE THERE MORE THINGS KEEPING US TOGETHER THAN THINGS KEEPING US SEPARATED?
Five people with five different views of reality and violence. A family marked by loss. Ten years after the murder of their father, they gather at the family txoko.
In 2010, a group of ETA dissidents expressed their desire to meet with the families of their victims. La mirada del otro (The Other’s Gaze) tells the story of one such encounter.
In a nameless place, two people reconnect with their past. The daughter of the sea and the son of the earth explore memories, silences and wounds. They talk about identity, pain, politics and love.
WHY “EMBERS OF VIOLENCE AND PEACE”?
What was an intuition ten years ago is now a certainty. A trilogy that we have constructed throughout this time. Three pieces that we have put together with effort, documentary rigour and commitment, from the social perspective of the present in which we live, acquire their full meaning.
RESCOLDOS DE PAZ Y VIOLENCIA (Embers of peace and violence) has been cooking slowly from the need to express, curiosity, and the desire to approach to understand, which has gone through each play. PROYECTO 43-2 was born and transformed until it became what it is today: a social portrait that, through the testimony of a family, generates one’s own identity within the context we inhabit, the beginning of coexistence. LA MIRADA DEL OTRO came from the desire to share a genuine experience that had taken place in our country. As shocking as it was real, it turned the prevailing discourse of hatred and revenge on its head. VIAJE AL FIN DE LA NOCHE came to talk about our own present, about people of our age, sons and daughters of violence, who are building Basque society today without any tools.
And as a whole, the trilogy proposes an open and necessary conversation, which we hope will transcend the theatre seats, about coexistence, peace, violence and memory so that it never happens again. Through the search for scenic beauty and by approaching the dissident discourses of each group, we can’t even imagine what they contain.
